Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive degenerative disease of the nervous system. The disease is not rare, and it can affect individuals from any background. In the United States, more than 5,000 people are diagnosed with ALS each year. Early symptoms of ALS include muscle stiffness and weakness and may include difficulty with speech and swallowing. Individuals are affected in different ways, and the disease progresses differently in each person. Patients are diagnosed through neurological testing and a study of the individual's medical history. ALS patients require a great deal of physical and emotional care from family, friends, and health care professionals.
